First Lady Jill Biden meets with thousands of New England teachers on day two of trade show visit – Boston News, Weather, Sports

BOSTON (WHDH) — First Lady Jill Biden will join thousands of New England teachers Friday morning at the National Convention of the American Federation of Teachers, where she will deliver a speech.

On Thursday, Biden spent her first of several days in the Bay State visiting and speaking with military veterans and their families.

Biden, accompanied by Massachusetts Senator Ed Markey and Massachusetts Congresswoman Ayanna Pressley, visited the headquarters of the Home Base program, an organization that serves 2,000 service members and the families of those killed in action and plans to expand its reach to more to expand communities.

“This is an amazing program,” Biden said. “Because so many families need help. Mental health is real. This is a real problem in our country. The pandemic was a big part of that. War is a big part of it.”

The First Lady was able to experience the products of a Home Base program firsthand. FLOTUS was able to admire an exhibition of masks made by patients to better dissect their emotions. The masks show how patients believe the world perceives them from the outside, while the interior of the artworks show how they feel on the inside.

Markey urged the first lady to help keep our focus on the issues facing veterans and their families.

“You are using your incredible power to ensure these issues get the spotlight they deserve,” the Bay State Senator said.

Two Army veterans shared Dr. Biden also shares her struggles with PTSD.

“I didn’t want to live between PTSD, TBI and deep depression anymore,” Army Lt. Col. Amy Lynn Kalow said as the first lady clasped her hands.

The fiancee of a soldier who committed suicide also reflected on her struggle.

Occasions like the one Biden attended can further support the cause of soldiers in need, according to Army Sergeant First Class Julian Kitching.

“We talk about it a lot, but we don’t always have a tangible solution, so I think we’re presenting what’s possible…” Kitching said. “I think it’s going to be meaningful for people to see and replicate this at scale across the country.”
