FIFA 22 cross-play testing begins on PS5, Xbox Series S/X and Stadia

FIFA 22 will soon begin cross-play – or cross-platform play support – for multiplayer games, EA Sports announced on Tuesday. The game allows users on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series S/X and Google Stadia to play FIFA 22 with other players on these platforms. It is currently unknown if the PC version of the game will feature cross-play support. The test suggests EA Sports could be working to roll out cross-platform support in more game modes for the upcoming FIFA 23 – or EA Sports FC 23 if the licensing ends – which is expected later this year.

In a website post, EA announced that it would begin testing cross-play support on the PS5, Xbox Series S/X, and Stadia versions of FIFA 22 “in the near future.” The test will be limited to Online Seasons and Online Friendlies modes, with cross-platform support on current-gen consoles and Google’s cloud-based game streaming service. FIFA 22 will consider players from other platforms for matchmaking once a user signs up for the upcoming crossplay test.

When FIFA 22 cross-play testing is enabled, players will see a widget in the lower-right corner of the screen. Opening the widget allows players to opt-in or opt-out of the test. The widget allows users to select a friend’s name to invite them to a game. Online friend mode will also allow players to choose friends on other platforms, according to EA Sports. Meanwhile, FIFA 22 also allows toggling participation in the cross-play test from the matchmaking options settings screen.

EA Sports says the upcoming cross-play test will have no direct impact on gameplay, and matchmaking in Online Seasons will accommodate players from other platforms once testing begins. While players on the PS5, Xbox Series S/X, and Stadia versions of the game can participate in the test, there’s no word on whether previous-gen consoles and PC players will be able to access cross-play in the future. Sony’s PlayStation 4 supports cross-platform select titles after adding support for the feature in 2018.

According to the publisher, the FIFA 22 cross-play test will only include support for online seasons and online friendlies to reduce the likelihood of new issues being introduced into the game. The post states that the game data and feedback from both modes “will help guide how crossplay might be further implemented in future titles,” suggesting that FIFA 23 could officially support crossplay in additional game modes when it’s later released in will be released this year.

It is worth noting that EA Sports’ FIFA does not support cross-gen play due to gameplay differences between the PS4/Xbox One version and the PS5/Xbox Series S/X version of FIFA 22. The PC version is considered last-gen, alongside PS4 and Xbox One. Therefore, even if FIFA 23 / EA Sports FC 23 received full cross-play support, it would not work across PC and console generations.
