The Duchess of York gave a resounding endorsement to the disgraced king who continues to build his life after the Virginia Giuffre scandal.

On Monday, Andrew was prevented from appearing at the Queen’s Order service for fear of a “backlash”.

And for many, his immediate role in the royal system remains uncertain as experts warn his chances of being reinstated into full public life remain slim.

But this week his former wife rushed to his defense – vowing to stand by the prince in times of need.

“I will stand very firmly by Andrew, who is a very good and kind man,” she told Times Radio.

“And I believe that. We are divorced.”

The couple separated in 1996 but have rightly remained very close to their children Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie – who have both married in the last four years.

Fergie, as she’s commonly known, has reportedly continued to take up residence at the Royal Lodge in Windsor, Berkshire – and regularly visits the grounds.

And the Duchess had made no secret of her desire to keep the York family together – she insisted it was “very important” to the Queen.

When asked by journalist Mariella Frostup, she said: “If I were to say it’s my home. It’s a place where we form a united front with the girls. It’s her home.

“And now my grandkids are coming here and I’ve always believed in communication, compromise and compassion.

“I’ve always believed in it. I have great faith.”

Speaking of their 36-year wedding, she added: “It was just extraordinary. I think my life is an amazing life.

“I think I was very lucky. And I’m just starting my life again. And I think it’s pretty cool to be able to say that.”

Andrew has continued to cut a dejected figure after his reputation was tarnished by his involvement in a civil sexual assault case that was settled in February.

However, he had reportedly been plotting a royal comeback after asking his mother to return his patronage and HRH title just five months after they were stripped from him.

The Duke has consistently denied any allegations of wrongdoing.

Sarah says she believed in cleaning “your side of the road” and that “honesty and integrity” could bring her former lover back into the fold.

She told the radio station: “I believe if you brush your side of the street when you look in your mirror and you are clear and concise and you know in your integrity that you did the best and best job with your heart and with the greatest intentions, then you hold this line.

“What other people do, that’s their situation, and they have to clean their own side of the street.”

Amid the scandal, Fergie said she took on a bigger role in supporting her daughters, who are now caring for young tots.

She replied: “Every time I look at my girls I realize what the secret of good motherhood is. Show yourself. That’s it. Show up and listen.

“You turn off the phone, close the door, turn off the TV and say are you alright? Is that me? did i annoy you What’s happening?

“You know, and you really take away the fear factor because you’re so present with them. And I think that’s the secret. That’s how I did it.

“The girls, I mean how did they deal with it? Honestly, I take my hat off to them, but I think that’s because the three of us, Beatrice, Eugene and I, are called the Tripod and stick to speak your truth.

“So we speak our truths to each other and in doing so you cleanse, exactly what I just said through this program is you look in the mirror and cleanse your side of the road.

“If you did that, is there a problem?”
