Felipe Massa is convinced of that Pierre Gasly must leave the Red Bull program to fulfill his potential.
Gasly has had a rollercoaster ride where he has shown promise since his F1 debut in 2017 with Red Bull junior team Toro Rosso, now known as AlphaTauri.
He was then called up to the senior team in 2019 but looked completely overwhelmed against Max Verstappen, so much so that he was demoted after just half a season, with Alex Albon taking his place.
At that point his career seemed to be over before it even began, but since that moment the Frenchman has driven exceptionally, consistently scoring points and claiming three podium finishes including a momentous win at the 2020 Italian Grand Prix.
That form had led some to believe Gasly could soon return to the Red Bull squad, but those hopes were dashed last week after it was revealed Sergio Perez had signed a contract extension with the league leaders until the end of 2024.
With Verstappen also set to stay at Red Bull until 2028, Gasly now has all but a chance to drive with his former team and that has fueled speculation that the 26-year-old will leave AlphaTauri if another team comes after his services calls.
Massa, who won 11 Grands Prix with Ferrari and narrowly lost the title to Sir Lewis Hamilton in 2008, believes a top team should sign him, telling F1TV: “He’s been really fast all weekend [at the Monaco Grand Prix].
“Things didn’t go well in qualifying because of the strategy and the red flag, it didn’t go optimally.
“But I mean the performances he’s been showing for a long time, he’s incredible.
“He also needs a good car because he shows that he can drive a top car, he shows that he can even fight for wins.”
Gasly’s AlphaTauri contract runs until the end of this year, although Red Bull boss Helmut Marko has claimed to keep him until at least 2023.
But moving to another top team will not prove easy as Ferrari, Mercedes and McLaren have all signed drivers for next season and while there is a vacancy at Alpine it is likely to be filled by promising youngster Oscar Piastri .
