Federal transit officials call for safety improvements for the MBTA – Boston News, Weather, Sports

Federal transportation officials highlighted four areas that MBTA needs to improve quickly.

Officials are demanding that MBTA ensure the control center is properly staffed, rail yards are safer, delayed track maintenance is over and workers have their certifications up to date.

The MBTA said its crews are already working on the list of improvements.

Federal regulators launched an investigation last month after several recent incidents occurred on the T, including the death of a man who was pulled by a red line train in April.

On Monday, the MBTA released new details about a green line crash earlier this month that saw two trains collide and derail each other. According to MBTA, both trains were moving faster than they should have been, and one of the trains didn’t stop when it should have. Passengers were not injured, but people had to go through the tunnels to return to the station.

The MBTA safety committee suggests operators need more training.
