WASHINGTON – Dr. Anthony Fauci, President Joe Biden’s top medical adviser, said on Thursday that omicrons will become the dominant Covid-19 variant in the United States within weeks, urging everyone to get vaccinated. -Pick up and give booster shots to fight this disease.

“This is the most contagious Covid virus that we have to deal with. It’s going to be dominant here soon. That’s one thing we know,” Fauci told a virtual audience of the Foundation. United States Chamber of Commerce.

Fauci urged people who have not been immunized against Covid and who are eligible for a booster shot to receive their dose. He described the omicron variant as “a threat in front of us right now.”

“When you look at the current rate of infection, things get worse as we go into winter,” he said. “And with omicron breathing in our backs, things can get really bad, especially for the unvaccinated.”

Although omicron is more contagious than earlier variants, it remains unclear whether it causes milder or more severe illness than previous strains.

Fauci said that people who are vaccinated and have had their booster shots “will be relatively well protected, at least against serious illness.”

Earlier this week, World Health Organization Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said: At least 77 countries have reported omicron . cases, but that variant may be more common and remains undefined.

Tedros warned that vaccines alone would not protect countries from omicrons, stressing the importance of masks and social distancing.

Fauci also said the US is experiencing a resurgence of the delta variant.

“Delta is still a serious problem,” Fauci explained. I mean, we’re looking at our role in omicron, it’s going to take on a dominant role soon, I’d imagine in a couple of weeks’ time. as we move into January.”

“When you look at the delta that we’re dealing with right now, we’re having an increase in every parameter, the number of cases increased, the number of hospitalizations and deaths are still at 1,100. So, we are at 1,100. I’m in a difficult situation, especially unvaccinated people. They are very vulnerable,” Fauci said.
