A family faces backlash after their six-year-old boy ran a 26.2-mile marathon while crying. Some called the family “abusive,” and one critic once accused them of “bribing” the boy with Pringles potato chips to get done.
Ben and Kami Crawford let their son Rainier compete in the Flying Pig with the rest of their family Marathon in Cincinnati last Sunday.
The Crawfords of Bellevue, Kentucky responded to comments on Instagram that Rainier was crying at the racetrack.
“Many people erroneously report that people have seen him cry for the ‘entire’ or ‘majority’ of the race and that there are numerous witnesses,” the Crawfords wrote on Tuesday.
‘With our finish time that’s impossible as we’ve done most of the last 5 miles alone and most people’s experience with us has been a one off 30 second run.’
The parents acknowledged that Rainier “had a fall,” but said that “every single member of our family cried at marathons.”
“These experiences were very limited compared to what was reported, and despite the incredible physical and emotional difficulties of running a marathon, the amount of his crying is comparable to what we would have experienced if we were running on a Sunday morning.” would have stayed home,” the post reads.
The Crawfords also claimed that they asked their son “a number of times if he wanted to quit and he was VERY clear he would prefer to continue.”
All eight family members took part in a marathon together for the first time. The five older kids waited more than an hour at mile 25 and all crossed the finish line in 8 hours and 35 minutes.
The Crawfords came under even more fire when they Instagrammed a photo of Rainier holding stacks of Pringles, explaining that he was “physically struggling” during the race.
Olympic marathoner Lee Troop commented on “race organizers allowing a 6-year-old to run a marathon”.
“Child stops every 3 minutes after 20 miles, cries and is emotionally distressed. Parents bribe him to finish and he gets Pringles,” Troop tweeted. “Parents see no problem in allowing this. Everything about it is wrong!’
The Flying Pig Marathon said in a statement that it “takes the safety of all participants very seriously.”
“We receive numerous requests for special accommodations each year and carefully evaluate each one,” the marathon said.
“Our goal is to offer all participants a positive racing experience while supporting them on the track. The Flying Pig Marathon was founded with the idea of hosting a world class road race and always will.”
