Facebook voter registration prompt angers Conservatives

September 20 is National Voter Registration Day. The date was chosen because it gives people time to meet the registration deadlines required to vote in November. As has been its custom for years, to mark the occasion, Facebook included a notification asking users if they’re registered to vote and a link to help them navigate the process.
Right-wing conspiracy theorists are convinced that Facebook’s solicitation of voter registration is some kind of nefarious plot.
Perennially decriminalized Islamophobe Laura Loomer used Telegram to whine across Facebook and Instagram, owned by parent company Meta, acknowledging the bipartisan National Voter Registration Day.
Loomer, who is banned from both platforms, shared a screenshot asking an Instagram account called Stop Communism if he’s registered to vote in Wisconsin. She unsubstantiatedly suggested that people would change the state they are registered in to a swing state to change the outcome there.
Fraudulently registering to vote is a crime.
Other Conservatives came so close to the problems of Facebook and election interference – but still managed to miss them.
“So Facebook has been accused of election interference, and what’s happening, they have a website to help people register to vote.” tweeted one. “We’re having the 2020 election again and the useless @GOP is doing NOTHING about it.”
Facebook has been credibly accused of turning a blind eye to electoral interference on the platform, most notoriously in 2016. But this interference in the election has largely benefited Republicans.
Complaints abounded on social media on Tuesday about Facebook encouraging people to get involved in the democratic process.

Given that Facebook is the platform of choice for older social media users, who tend to be conservative, the right should be happy that Facebook is encouraging people to register to vote.
You are not.
“I’m already getting a notification on my Facebook and Instagram page asking if I’m a registered voter,” a Truth Social user complained Tuesday. “The electoral influence is already beginning.”
