Facebook is reportedly killing its portal video calling devices

Facebook owner Meta is reportedly discontinuing its consumer versions of the portal’s video calling and streaming devices.

Mark Zuckerberg’s tech giant, which renamed itself Meta last year, will no longer produce the Portal devices.

Meta will continue to sell the current portal models in stock and provide long-term support to existing customers, but will continue to focus on business applications for future releases.

Portal never caught on as a competitor to Amazon and Google, but became popular with businesses during the pandemic as a tool to improve collaboration between employees working from home.

So it makes sense that the company would reposition smart display devices exclusively for businesses.

Meta reportedly sold 600,000 Portal devices in 2020 and 800,000 in 2021 as companies looked for solutions to simplify communication with remote workers.

It’s unclear how portals for businesses will differ from their consumer counterparts.

Facebook introduced portal devices in 2018 and hailed them as “the future of video calling.” Last year the company presented two new versions of the devices Portal Go and Portal+.

Not only has Meta stopped operating its consumer portals, but it has also halted development of its new dual-camera smartwatch in favor of developing other wearables for now.
