Facebook blocks popular feature on iPhone – is yours affected?

If you’re having trouble with dark mode on Facebook, you’re not alone.

Users all over the world have complained that the feature has mysteriously stopped working on their iPhone.

An annoying bug causes the app to revert to traditional light mode every time it’s opened.

Dark mode swaps out whites and other bright colors for darker tones and blacks, which not only puts less strain on your eyes but can also save battery.

It has become very popular in apps like WhatsApp, Instagram, and Google Chrome in recent years.

The problem on Facebook seems to have started after a recent app update.

379.0, the latest version of Facebook’s iOS app, was designed to “fix some crashes and make features load faster,” according to the company’s release notes.

Instead, it seems to have created entirely new problems.

“@facebook can you please fix the dark mode settings issues asap,” one user tweeted.

“I’m visually impaired and having dark mode turned off wreaks havoc on my eyes.”

Another added: “Facebook keeps changing my profile from dark mode to light mode and I’m blinded every time. STOP.”

A third person added: “Facebook needs to fix the dark mode bug.

“I opened Facebook this morning and felt the power of 1000 suns in my eyes.”

It is unclear when Facebook will fix the error.

How to enable dark mode on Facebook

If dark mode works, you can usually turn it on like this.

Go to Menu and find Settings & Privacy at the bottom.

Choose settings.

Under settings you should see Dark mode last.

Here you can switch On and it should change immediately.

Alternatively, if you have generally set your iPhone to dark mode, you can select that system option, which means Facebook will do whatever your iPhone says – if the Facebook app isn’t broken, of course.

Why does it feel like Facebook is snooping on you?

Here’s what you need to know…

  • The magic of targeted advertising is that it should feel relevant to you – even if you don’t know why.
  • Facebook doesn’t need to spy on your real-world conversations because you’re giving away so much information anyway.
  • Follow this link and you can download everything Facebook knows about you. Most of you will quickly find that this is an amazing amount of information.
  • Advertisers may use information from your activity across the web and across devices, even if you’re not logged into Facebook or other services.
  • You’ll probably know where you live, what you like, who your friends are, how much money you make, your political beliefs, and more.
  • So if you’re getting ads for something you’ve been talking out loud about, it’s almost certainly only advertisers who are very good at predicting your interests.
  • It is also possible that an advertising campaign is running and you saw an ad and did not notice it. You’ve then talked about it without realizing you’ve been promoted, and only then notice future ads – which suddenly seem suspicious.
  • Let’s say you were talking about a holiday in Scotland and suddenly you’re advertised as holiday in Scotland.
  • Maybe you’ve never searched for anything related to it.
  • But Facebook could use information about your net worth, past holiday interests, the time of year (ads promoting Scottish winter retreats are common in the colder months) and your location.
  • What looks like snooping is actually just clever advertising.
