Mateo Kovacic could still be operational Chelsea in the FA Cup final against Liverpool and will undergo late medical tests ahead of the clash at Wembley.

Kovacic was caught by Leeds United striker Dan James at Elland Road on Wednesday night, resulting in the former Manchester United man being shown a red card.

The Croatia international tried to continue but was eventually substituted off as the Blues sealed a 3-0 win.

While the prognosis was bleak at first, Tuchel is hopeful he can still be there on Saturday as Kovavic himself is pushing to make the squad.

“We’re going to try today, which is quite surprising when we’re in a situation where we can try,” Tuchel said at a press conference.

“But Mateo wants to try and the medical department has given the green light to try. The advantage is that the ligament was torn in the last incident and therefore there is no new injury.

“There’s a lot of pain and there’s a lot of swelling, we hope maybe there’s enough time for him to make it, we’ll try in training and then we’ll know more about it. He was very good in the game and in general he has improved again.”

N’Golo Kante, meanwhile, missed the midweek trip to Yorkshire but Tuchel is also hoping the influential Frenchman will be ready after coming through light training sessions unscathed on Thursday.

“He tries too,” continued Tuchel. “He tried yesterday in training and trained more or less everything.

“Hopefully no reaction now. It was a reduced session because of quite a long journey and fatigue, so it wasn’t high intensity.

‘We’re going to try him today too, he’s very keen to do it 100%, being able to plan with him tomorrow would be crucial for us.’

Liverpool have their own concerns in midfield as Fabinho is set to miss the clash at Wembley.

The Brazilian star limped away during Liverpool’s Premier League win at Aston Villa on Tuesday night.

“There’s a good chance he’ll come back at any time – not for the weekend, but whenever,” said Klopp.

“There’s a good chance he’ll be available for the Champions League final.”
