Former Chelsea owner Ken Bates has criticized the restrictions imposed on the club after Roman Abramovich was sanctioned by the UK government.

Chelsea have been granted a license by the government to continue all football-related activities, but in response to the freeze on Abramovich’s assets, the club are unable to sell Signing tickets to fans, players or renewing contracts.

And Bates, who sold Chelsea to Abramovich for £140million in 2003, believes the government’s decision means “ordinary people” are “suffering” from the Russian oligarch’s sanctions.

“The fact that you can’t buy Chelsea game programming must mean that Putin has screwed himself and all the common people in Moscow are hiding in their basements because they can’t watch a Chelsea game on TV. ‘ Bates told MailOnline.

“As usual, it is the ordinary people who suffer. You probably have people working at Chelsea asking if they have a job? What’s her future? Do you have security? And fans at Chelsea. What do they have to do with Putin bombing maternity hospitals in Ukraine?

“It hurts ordinary English citizens. Makes no difference to Russia at all.

“That makes public service the laughingstock of the world. I’ve dealt with civil servants most of my life, and by and large they’re all damn useless.

‘Abramovich turned around and said, ‘I’m going to sell the club and whatever I get I’m going to give to charity’. she [the Government] took over the club. Fine. Why didn’t they appoint an administrator and move on?

“Instead we have all these regulations that only make good headlines. “England is taking decisive action against Russia.” If we try to help Ukraine, we should do meaningful things.”

Speaking about Abramovich’s sanctions, Bates replied, “I have no sympathy for him. Why should I? He’s worth £7-8 billion.

“But he can only eat steak and chips twice a day, like me. When he goes to his grave his shroud will have no pockets in it.’
