You could say that rihanna Fans are eagerly awaiting their ninth studio album, but they’re past the point of impatience – and with good reason.
The Grammy winner hasn’t released an album since January 2016, when she dropped her opus magnum. Antiwhich contained the blockbuster singles “Work”. drake, Needed Me, Kiss It Better and Love on the Brain. Since then she has been teasing and teasing and teasing her next project, but also other ventures — like her multimillion-dollar brands Fenty Beauty and Fenty Skin, and welcoming her first child, a little boy ASAP Rocky – have delayed the process.
#R9, as fans have temporarily dubbed the album, has been in the works for many years. Rihanna first confirmed in June 2018 that she was “in the studio working on new music” when she was performing The Graham Norton Show. Even then, she remained mum about the details, teasing, “You’ll just have to wait and see.”
When asked about an update 15 months later, the Barbadian native was equally tight-lipped. “Well, obviously I’m a confident woman, so whatever I do, it’s going to be confident — whether it’s the album, perfume, lingerie, makeup or fashion,” she said entertainment tonight in September 2019. “You all have to wait, Navy. I am sorry.”
However, not everything about the album was top secret. Rihanna confirmed that it’s inspired by her reggae and dancehall roots, and Pharrell Williams and The dream are on the shortlist of producers to help her bring it all together. She later confirmed that motherhood wasn’t going to completely change her sound.
“My fans would kill me if they waited that long for a lullaby,” she joked entertainment tonight during New York Fashion Week in February 2022.
However, her son – whose name has yet to be announced – could be a reason why her album is still not out more than four years after she first teased the new project. “They rarely leave their baby’s side,” an insider said exclusively Us weekly in August 2022 by the Grammy winner and her partner. “They are very private with their newborn out of concern for his safety and just want to keep him out of the public eye for now. … They both feel truly blessed and couldn’t be happier.”
The Savage x Fenty founder’s loved ones are glad she’s finding a work-life balance. “Rihanna is a workaholic so it’s nice to see that she’s taking the time to thrive as a mom,” the source added.
However, Rihanna never takes a long break. She will return to the stage at the 2023 Super Bowl halftime show for her first major performance since giving birth in May 2022, and fans are hoping the comeback will include new music.
