A royal tribute. It was considered a high honor when the late Queen Elizabeth II allowed family members to borrow her jewels – and Duchess Kate made sure to retaliate by honoring the monarch with her chosen jewels.
During her seven decades as Britain’s longest-ruling sovereign, the Queen – who died in September 2022 aged 96 – bestowed her jewelery on special occasions, always abiding by royal protocol. Tiaras in particular have their own set of rules, including one stating that family members cannot wear the headgear until they are married – and non-family members cannot wear one until they marry into the family.
Kate first wore one of Queen Elizabeth’s tiaras at her wedding in April 2011 Prince William, featuring Cartier’s sparkling ‘Halo’ design holding up her sheer veil. The stunning headpiece was originally purchased by the monarch’s father, King George VI, for his wife, Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother, who gave it to her eldest daughter on Elizabeth’s 18th birthday.
While Kate has often chosen to honor her late mother-in-law, Princess Diana, with her style and jewels, in the years since her marriage to William, she has also frequently worn many of the Queen’s accessories – on celebratory and somber occasions.
At the Queen’s platinum jubilee in June 2022, the Duchess of Cambridge nodded to the crown while wearing the sovereign’s Bahrain pearl earrings to the Thanksgiving service. Although Elizabeth was unable to attend the ceremony because she felt “some discomfort,” Buckingham Palace said in a statement at the time, her daughter-in-law’s subtle tribute made her presence well known.
During Prince Philip’s funeral in April 2021, Kate paid homage to the royals – and the love story of Elizabeth and Philip – by borrowing the Queen’s four-row Japanese pearl choker, which she previously wore to the royals’ 70th wedding anniversary celebration in 2017.
Two years before Queen Elizabeth’s death, a source exclusively said Us weekly about the bond between Kate and the monarch.
“Her Majesty sees the Cambridges as the future of the monarchy and has complete confidence in the judgment of Kate and William,” the insider said Us in April 2020. “Kate is seeking advice on speeches to make, who she can rely on most at the Palace and do’s and don’ts of protocol. The Queen is more than happy to share her wisdom – she is proud to be Catherine’s preferred adviser on royal life.”
