The majority of NBA Finals since the 1996-97 season consisted of teams that finished in the top five in defensive and offensive ratings before the All-star tournament began.
With the exception of just three cases, it’s no surprise that the strongest teams statistically have made it to the annual NBA Finals. The NBA Finals are mostly a contest between some of the best defensively and offensively ranked teams in the NBA for each season.
The Milwaukee Bucks were named the NBA Champions for the second time in their history last season when they beat the Phoenix Suns 4-2 to claim their first title in 50 years. The Bucks took a historic win in game 6 of the NBA finals in July earlier this year thanks to a 50-piece performance by Greek star Giannis Antetokounmpo.
Every NBA champion made it to the top 5 in Attack or Defense prior to the All-Star break
The Milwaukee Bucks took on the Chris Paul-led Phoenix Suns at the 2021 NBA Championship and walked away with the title in an emotional night for the city of Milwaukee. The Wisconsin-based team beat the Suns 4-2 to claim the title in a final that did not feature LeBron James or Stephen Curry for the first time in nearly a decade.
Since the NBA began calculating Offensive and Defensive ratings during the 1996-97 season, only three teams have been unable to start the All-star break without being in the top five because of the lack of offensive and defensive ratings and defense leads to the All-star stage.
This metric shows the quality and consistency of the teams that made it to the finals by consistently delivering the highest numbers in the league and maintaining that level of consistency for most of the season.
The Bucks, the defending NBA champions, finished second in the league in offensive ratings while the final loser, The Phoenix Sun, were third in defensive ratings.
This year’s Golden State Warriors and Phoenix Suns not only have the two best records in the NBA this season, but also feature in the top five for offensive and defensive ratings. The importance of this stat highlights the title contenders as the all-star breakout kicks in.
The regular season is not considered as important as the post-season period. But gathering the numbers leads us to believe that strong performances at both ends of the field, good load management and tight consistency played a key role in the teams progressing deep into the knockout stages.
