Erik ten Hag has issued a warning to the Manchester United squad in his first interview as manager, telling the underperforming players that under his regime ‘good isn’t good enough’.

Ten Hag officially took charge of United on Monday morning after signing a three-year deal with the club last month.

The Dutchman joins Old Trafford from Eredivisie champions Ajax for Manchester United, who finished just sixth in the Premier League this season.

United were expected to be in contention for the title after finishing runners-up in 2020-21 and signing Cristiano Ronaldo, Raphael Varane and Jadon Sancho last summer.

But the club’s struggles have continued since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement in 2013, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer being sacked in November and Ralf Rangnick struggling in his role as interim manager.

Ten Hag says bringing success back to Old Trafford is a “huge challenge” and has warned his side he expects them to “cooperate” and embrace his “totally high-pushing” style of football.

“I expect that,” said the 52-year-old in an interview with MUTV. “I have high expectations of myself and I demand the same from my team.

“You have to work together and do your best every day. And I would say good is not good enough for me. We have to do better.’

Ten Hag added: “We’re playing in the theater of dreams and we have to entertain the opponent. We play in the opposing half and have to play attacking football.

“We have to do the pressing, the total high pressing – that’s also a similarity with Ajax – and the adventurous football.”

Ten Hag won three Eredivisie titles with Ajax and is hoping for more success at Manchester United, who have gone five straight seasons without a title.

Asked about his vision for the Premier League giants, Ten Hag said: “It’s the first thing: accept the current situation, but also know that a year ago this club, this team, were runners-up in the Premier League.

“There is potential and now it’s up to us to exploit that. It’s a process, it will take time, but I’m sure we’ll get to the point where we’ll be successful. We have to work hard and it has to be based on the right philosophy and strategy.’
