Erik ten Hag allegedly told that Manchester United’s hierarchy must complete Frenkie de Jong’s signing by the end of the week.
Should they fail, the new Red Devils boss will ditch his long-standing interest in the Barcelona midfielder as he doesn’t want the transfer saga to continue throughout the summer.
It has been known for some time that De Jong is Ten Hag’s No. 1 transfer target after the pair worked so well together at Ajax, but a deal for the 25-year-old is proving difficult as Barcelona are ready to sell To remedy their financial woes, they want a fee of around £70million, far more than United are willing to bid.
Matters were further complicated by the player’s desire to stay at the Nou Camp The Mirror is now reporting that Ten Hag is ready to end the pursuit of his former protégé.
The manager wants as many new players as possible at Old Trafford before the start of the pre-season tour of Asia and Australia in July.
The club’s bosses are also keen to avoid another protracted transfer saga following the well-documented failure of David Moyes’ lone summer as United manager in 2013.
At the time, United looked certain to sign Barcelona midfielder Thiago Alcantara, now from Liverpool, but Moyes and the club’s then-CEO Ed Woodward were reluctant to finalize the deal and the Spaniard ended up joining Bayern Munich and achieved great success there.
Moyes was then promised a deal could be struck for fellow Barcelona playmaker Cesc Fabregas and waited until the final days of the transfer window before realizing it would never happen.
Eventually, United panicked and paid the odds for Marouane Fellaini from Moyes’ former club Everton, a transfer that has gone down as one of the worst in Premier League history.
Should they miss De Jong, Ten Hag has a list of other players in the same position he would like to sign and the club have been linked with a host of other midfielders including Leeds’ Kalvin Phillips and free agents Corentin Tolisso and Christian Eriksen.
