Erik ten Hag is “surprised”. Manchester United don’t have any transfer activity in the window so far and were expecting the club to have reportedly made several signings in the meantime.

The Dutchman took the reins at Old Trafford earlier this summer, which should herald a complete overhaul of the squad, necessitated in part by the departure of a host of high-profile first-team players.

Among others, Paul Pogba, Juan Mata, Edinson Cavani, Nemanja Matic and Jesse Lingard have left the club on a free transfer.

Former caretaker manager Ralf Rangnick had hinted that the Exodus would add up to eight or even ten new players in the summer, but Ten Hag have yet to secure a single summer deal.

According to The Mirror, the former Ajax boss was surprised by the lack of progress United’s hierarchy has made to replenish the depleted squad he inherited – a squad that slipped to sixth place last season .

Ten Hag had hoped to have several new faces by now but faces a race against time only to complete a single transfer before the start of preseason.

Things are expected to accelerate in the coming days as a deal for Frenkie de Jong moves forward and Barcelona need the money before the end of the month.

But that’s the only transfer that’s at an advanced stage and in another blow to Ten Hag, his hopes of pairing De Jong with another former Ajax academy starlet, Christian Eriksen, remain in limbo.

In a clear sign of the lack of traction United currently have, the Danish playmaker – who is a free agent – has yet to be persuaded to join the Red Devils and remains leaning towards extending his contract with Brentford.

Eriksen is in no hurry and wants to see the clubs interested in him strengthen over the summer, but United haven’t strengthened at all so far – in fact, they are considerably weaker from today’s perspective.

Ten Hag is set to return to Manchester in the coming week to prepare for the start of the pre-season and are expected to start United’s transfer business.

But they are now catching up compared to many of their rivals, with Liverpool completing their transfer deal after landing Darwin Nunez and Manchester City approaching Kalvin Phillips to help in their conquest of Erling Haaland.

Tottenham have also strengthened, signing Yves Bissouma and Ivan Perisic, while Arsenal have completed a deal for Fabio Vieira and are on the verge of signing Gabriel Jesus.
