Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag said he spoke to the club’s board of directors about their commitment to the team’s success on the pitch.

Over the past decade, the Red Devils have enjoyed some of the best commercial activity in the world, with overseas tours and big-name signings boosting the club’s box office.

However, the Manchester giants have been without a trophy for five years and will not play in next season’s Champions League after a sixth-place finish this season.

Earlier this year, fellow countryman Louis van Gaal – who managed United between 2014 and 2016 – warned Ten Hag against going to Old Trafford, claiming the club is more focused on the commercial side of the game than winning trophies.

However, in his press conference on Monday, Ten Hag indicated that the United hierarchy had reassured him that getting the team back on track to victory was their top priority.

He said: “I heard (Van Gaal’s warning). As I said, I draw my own line. I am convinced that will not be the case.

“Of course I spoke to the directors about it. Football is one, two and three in this club.

“Every club these days is commercial. Every club needs it. You need the revenue to be at the top.

Ten Hag has a big job to do at United, with poor performances cutting the connection between the team and the club’s supporters.

That season, the Red Devils finished sixth in the Premier League with their lowest points total ever.

Capitalizing on the club’s huge commercial earnings, a squad rebuild with a striker, a central midfielder and a centre-back is set to be launched this summer.

Still, securing the players at the top of Ten Hag’s wish list is becoming harder than ever as Old Trafford isn’t the attraction it once was.
