Netherlands manager Fred Rutten has announced that he has turned down Erik ten Hag’s offer to be part of the new coaching staff Manchester United.

Ten Hag will join United at the end of the season and plans to bring Mitchell van der Gaag, his assistant at Ajax, to Old Trafford with him.

But Rutten, who has managed PSV, Feyenoord FC Twente, Schalke and Anderlecht, has also held talks with Ten Hag over the prospect of helping out at United.

However, the 59-year-old has opted for the Netherlands and has agreed to become part of Ruud van Nistelrooy’s back team at PSV.

“I have a family, I have grandchildren. I want to see her every once in a while,” Rutten told ESPN.

“At Manchester United, you get on a train and you can’t get off. I want to feel comfortable in something you step into. That is the case with PSV.

“It’s nice to have grandkids that you see every now and then and play ball with.”

Rutten, meanwhile, will join forces with former United striker Van Nistelrooy, who will become PSV’s new manager this summer.

“Of course I spoke extensively with Ruud van Nistelrooy,” said Rutten.

“He made me give up the slightly freer life I have now. He sat with me in the room and we talked about football and other things for two hours. And when he talked about these other things in life, he triggered me too.

“I think Ruud already has some experience, he has already coached a number of teams, at Jong PSV and their U18s.

“He also gained experience in the Dutch national team. Ruud is ready, it seems to me. I’m positively critical.

“For me, PSV represents a Champions League club. Everything you do should serve that thought.”
