Erik ten Hag gets a huge bonus when he leads Manchester United back in the Champions League.

Ten Hag took charge at United this summer after a dismal season at Old Trafford last season under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Ralf Rangnick which saw the side finish sixth and fail to win a trophy.

United, who last won trophies in 2017, have picked up three sixth-place finishes in six of the last Premier League seasons and will be looking to return to the top four in 2022-23 to qualify for Europe’s elite club competition.

If they achieve that in the Dutchman’s debut season, Ten Hag will receive a £3million bonus, according to the Daily Mail.

United drew 2-2 with Aston Villa in their last game before the season after the Ten Hag era began with victories over Crystal Palace, Melbourne Victory and rivals Liverpool.

One player who has impressed under Ten Hag is striker Anthony Martial, who has scored three goals in those four games while shining in the absence of Cristiano Ronaldo.

Ronaldo, who did not travel with United on his pre-season tour, is desperate for an escape route from Old Trafford and has been heavily linked with a move to Atletico Madrid.

In the meantime, United have increased their chances of signing Frenkie de Jong as Barcelona boss Xaxi suggests the La Liga giants could sell the midfielder to boost the club’s finances.

United start their Premier League season on August 7 when they host Brighton, but pundit Paul Merson believes they could miss the top four.

“They haven’t done enough business at this point to have a chance of securing UEFA Champions League football,” he said.

“That’s how it should be between Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal. If I had to choose between the two north London teams, I would have to choose Arsenal.
