Erik ten Hag continued to “count”. Manchester United are set to sign Benfica striker Darwin Nunez, but the club’s “hesitation” has meant he has agreed to join Liverpool in a £64million deal.

The 22-year-old will undergo a medical with Liverpool over the next 24 hours before penning a deal that could rise to around £80million depending on his success at Anfield.

The Uruguay international scored 36 goals last season, including twice against Liverpool in the Champions League.

Nunez was high on United’s priority list and ten Hag felt he could provide the perfect competition for Cristiano Ronaldo next season before becoming the club’s long-term first-choice striker.

But Erik ten Hag is furious with Manchester United missing out on Darwin Nunez’s £64m transfer and Duncan Castles says United have been caught off guard by Liverpool’s advances and Jurgen Klopp and Virgil van Dijk have proved crucial in luring Nunez to Anfield.

Nunez is said to regard Klopp as the ‘best manager in the world’, while Van Dijk was effusive about Nunez’s potential in a recent interview.

Ten Hag felt Nunez would be an ‘important’ addition but United must now find an alternative on the market.

United are yet to make a signing this summer as the club focus on landing Frenkie de Jong from Barcelona.

Ten Hag want a striker, a centre-back and a new right-back, as well as De Jong, but the club may need to sell to fund the moves towards their goals.
