Nunez is said to regard Klopp as the ‘best manager in the world’, while Van Dijk was effusive about Nunez’s potential in a recent interview.
Ten Hag felt Nunez would be an ‘important’ addition but United must now find an alternative on the market.
United are yet to make a signing this summer as the club focus on landing Frenkie de Jong from Barcelona.
Ten Hag want a striker, a centre-back and a new right-back, as well as De Jong, but the club may need to sell to fund the moves towards their goals.
