Erik ten Hag fears you Manchester United’s key players are not suited to the style of football he hopes to implement next season.

The Dutchman was presented to English media earlier this week following his arrival from Ajax.

Ten Hag has enjoyed a period of enduring success with the Eredivisie club, whose possession-based play has garnered much praise.

When asked what fans could expect from his revamped United team, the 52-year-old said: “Maybe you’ve seen Ajax? And I like it.

“But it’s always the players who decide how they play. I have the ideal, I will field my best team and I will field my players to get the best out of them.

“That they can go to the maximum, that they feel comfortable in the role and that in the end it’s about achieving success together.”

Despite that insistence, Ten Hag has reservations about David de Gea’s ability on the ball and whether he’s capable of passing through the lines, according to ESPN.

At Ajax, players like Andre Onana and Maarten Stekelenburg, formerly of Everton and Fulham, were ideally suited to this style of play.

De Gea, meanwhile, enjoyed a season that boosted his reputation and returned to the form in which he had won United’s Player of the Season award five times.

The Spain international was one of the few players to emerge from an exhausted season in good standing and responded brilliantly to losing his status as the club’s undisputed No. 1 to Dean Henderson.

Despite Ten Hag’s concerns, the former Atletico Madrid goalkeeper is likely to keep his place next season as United’s transfer priorities lie elsewhere.
