Erik ten Hag was very impressed Manchester United youngster Alejandro Garnacho has reportedly decided to bring the 17-year-old into the first-team squad.
The teenager, who played for Spain in youth but chose Argentina, inspired for United’s youth sides last season and even made two Premier League appearances at the end of the season.
Garnacho scored twice in the FA Youth Cup final as the Red Devils lifted the trophy for the first time in ten years and also impressed at this summer’s Toulon tournament.
While new boss Ten Hag is keen to strengthen himself in the transfer market, he is also keen to make better use of the club’s talented pool of academy players – and Garnacho is likely to be the first player to benefit.
Ten Hag was provided with a subscription to the club’s media channel MUTV so he could watch a repeat of the FA Youth Cup with Garnacho as the standout player in the game.
The youngster has previously trained with Argentina’s senior team and has impressed head coach Lionel Scaloni, while also featuring in United’s first-team under Ralf Rangnick.
There will be plenty of opportunities for young players next season, with Ten Hag also relying on Ajax academy graduates, while the Europa League offers a perfect testing ground for players like Garnacho.
As well as the Argentine, Ten Hag is also said to have been impressed by Hannibal Mejbri – who has made several fiery guest appearances under Rangnick – and he too will be given a chance in pre-season this summer.
Although Ten Hag is keen to capitalize on United’s excellent youth performance, he is also keen to bring in a number of new faces, with Barcelona’s Frenkie de Jong his main target.
As well as signing the Netherlands international, United are also said to be in the market for a defensive midfielder, a right winger and a new centre-forward.
