Eovaldi wins first full game of career in defeat of Orioles – Boston News, Weather, Sports

BOSTON (AP) — Nathan Eovaldi hit a seven-hit in his first full game of his career, and the Boston Red Sox beat the Baltimore Orioles 5-3 in the opener of a day-night doubleheader on Saturday.

The Red Sox earned their eighth win in 10 games after dropping two six-run leads with one loss Friday night. The matchup was tied at 3 before Bobby Dalbec’s pinch-hit homer collapsed in the sixth inning.

Rafael Devers had four hits for Boston, and Kiké Hernández added a two-run single.

Robinson Chirinos scored a two-run shot for Baltimore. The Orioles lost three out of four.

Eovaldi (2-2) pitched 108 in his 211th major league start. The 32-year-old right-hander conceded two earned runs, knocked out six and walked one.

It’s the most starts before an entire game is thrown in MLB history STATISTICS.

“It definitely means a lot to me,” said Eovaldi. “Especially how the game is changing now and things like that, and injuries that I’ve had.”

Eovaldi underwent surgery twice from Tommy John — once in high school and again in 2016 — and was sidelined in 2019 after having “loose bodies” removed in his elbow a year earlier.

“Every starter wants to get out there and finish their start,” he said. “It means a lot to me.”

There was some applause as he trotted out for the ninth time with the rarity of full games in baseball.

Boston’s bullpen was flagged for 10 runs Friday.

“He was great, especially in the second part of the game,” said Red Sox manager Alex Cora. “We had to readjust (the bullpen) at one point.”

Cora didn’t realize it was Eovaldi’s first full game until it was over.

“It was nice to see that they celebrated it downstairs (in the clubhouse), well deserved,” said Cora.

Dalbec, who hit just .162 after losing most of his playing time at first base to Franchy Cordero, drove a fastball into Boston’s bullpen against Keegan Akin (1-1).

Less than 12 hours after wiping out a six-run deficit by beating the Red Sox 10-0 in the last three innings, the Orioles equalized 3 in the fifth inning when Chirinos caught a hanging curveball from Eovaldi hit over the Green Monster.

The Red Sox had erased an early 1-0 hole when Jackie Bradley Jr. lined a run-scoring double and followed Hernández with his single, which trickled out of the glove of diving third baseman Ramón Urías into the flat of his left hand.

Orioles starter Jordan Lyles gave up three runs in 4 1/3 innings.

Orioles: The day after it was revealed that 24-year-old INF prospect Jahmai Jones was having season-ending surgery on Tommy John, they designated him for the assignment and called RHP Cody Sedlock.

Red Sox: Placed RHP Hansel Robles on 15-day injury list with back spasms.

In addition to Robles going to the IL, the Red Sox demoted right-hander Hirokazu Sawamura to Triple-A Worcester and recalled right-handers Ryan Brasier and Phillips Valdez.

Baltimore’s Rougned Odor went 0-4, ending a career-high hitting streak of 11 games.

For the nightcap, Orioles right-hander Denyi Reyes (0-0, 0.00 ERA) is expected to make his first major league start and second appearance against Boston right-hander Josh Winckowski, who is making his major league debut target.
