Eovaldi gets the first full game of his career; Red Sox-Os Split DH – Boston News, Weather, Sports

BOSTON (AP) — Rougned Odor hit a three-run homer and the Baltimore Orioles beat the Boston Red Sox 4-2 on Saturday to earn a split of a day-night double-header.

In the opening game, Nathan Eovaldi threw a seven-racer for his first full game of his career in Boston’s 5-3 win.

Austin Hays and Ryan McKenna each added two hits to the nightcap for Baltimore, which has won two of the first three in a five-game streak.

Christian Vázquez had three goals for Boston, who won eight of 10.

Odor hit just over Boston’s bullpen in the third inning to make it 4-0. The drive came after Ramón Urías hit an RBI singles against 23-year-old right winger Josh Winckowski (0-1), who was making his major league debut.

Winckowski lasted three innings, giving up four runs and six hits.

25-year-old right-hander Denyi Reyes made his first major league start, holding the Red Sox in a run for 3 2/3 innings.

“It means a lot,” Reyes, who appeared on Boston’s system in 2015, said of pitching at Fenway Park.

“I was here for seven years, part of the Boston Red Sox organization,” he said, breaking into a smile. “Before the game started, I waited, looked at Fenway Park and said, ‘I’m here. Let’s do this.”‘

Joey Krehbiel (2-3) threw 1 1/3 innings in relief for the win. Jorge López made four outs on his sixth save.

In the opening, Rafael Devers had four hits for Boston and Kiké Hernández added a two-run single. Devers went 0 for 4 in the second game.

Eovaldi (2-2) pitched 108 in his 211th major league start. The 32-year-old right-hander conceded two earned runs, knocked out six and walked one.

It’s the most starts for a pitcher before pitching an entire game in MLB history, according to STATS.

“It definitely means a lot to me,” said Eovaldi. “Especially how the game is changing now and things like that and injuries that I’ve had.”

Eovaldi underwent surgery twice from Tommy John — once in high school and again in 2016 — and was sidelined in 2019 after having “loose bodies” removed in his elbow a year earlier.

“Every starter wants to get out there and finish their start,” he said. “It means a lot to me.”

There was some applause as he trotted out for the ninth time with the rarity of full games in baseball.

The Red Sox had rebounded after losing two six-run leads Friday night. The opener was tied at 3 before Bobby Dalbec’s pinch-hit homer broke in the sixth.

Boston’s bullpen was flagged for 10 runs Friday.

“He was great, especially in the second part of the game,” Red Sox manager Alex Cora said of Eovaldi. “We had to readjust (the bullpen) at one point.”

Dalbec, who hit just .162 after losing most of his playing time at first base, drove a fastball into Boston’s bullpen to Keegan Akin (1-1).

Less than 12 hours after erasing a six-run deficit by beating the Red Sox 10-0 in the last three innings, the Orioles equalized by 3 in the fifth inning when Robinson overshot Chirino’s Eovaldi’s hanging curveball beat the Green Monster.

Orioles: The day after it was revealed that 24-year-old INF prospect Jahmai Jones was having season-ending surgery on Tommy John, they designated him for the assignment and called RHP Cody Sedlock.

Red Sox: Placed RHP Hansel Robles on 15-day injury list with back spasms. … 2B Trevor Story had the first game clear and SS Xander Bogaerts rested the second before retiring as a pinch-hitter.

Odor went 0-4 in the opening game, ending his career-high 11-game scoring streak before his HR in the nightcap.

Winckowski fanned Odor, who shot in the second with a 96-mile fastball for his first big league K. swung. Catcher Vázquez threw the ball at Boston’s dugout.

In addition to Robles going to the IL, the Red Sox demoted right-hander Hirokazu Sawamura to Triple-A Worcester and recalled right-handers Ryan Brasier and Phillips Valdez.

LHP Bruce Zimmermann (2-2, 3.78 ERA) will start against Boston RHP Nick Pivetta (3-4, 4.25) in Baltimore on Sunday.
