Environmental Consciousness: Young Henrys Brewer does what is right for beer lovers

However, with help from Sydney Water, Young Henrys has developed a commercial waste system that treats the remains of the brewing process before it is disposed of, as untreated waste can cause problems for the city’s sewage system.

Part of the water-saving initiatives includes the installation of a special mash filter that reduces water consumption in beer production. The mash filter ensures that 40 percent less water is used in the production process compared to conventional breweries. It is only one of four breweries in Australia to implement the unique equipment.

For Sydney Water, the partnership with the beer company is one of many with companies across the city to reduce water use and commercial waste.

Jennifer Ison, Sydney Water’s commercial operations manager, said the agency is working with many other organizations to implement water conservation practices.

“Water is a precious and finite resource. We all need to be aware of that,” she said.

In recent years, smaller companies have started to push for more sustainable and green business models, Ison said, which has also translated into consumer demands.

Vanessa Wilton, co-owner of Manly Spirits, said integrating sustainable practices into the Sydney distillery has been part of the business plan since it opened in 2017. The distillery has solar panels on its roof – which provides about 40 percent of the energy it needs, sends its spent whiskey grain to farmers for cattle feed and supplies used gin-infused raspberries to a local baker. The company also recycles its old alcohol bottles into glassware.

“I believe that as a global citizen and entrepreneur, I should do my part,” Wilton said. “I want to do my part and I think consumers want products that are made more sustainably.”
