England women’s Euro 2022 campaign got off to a successful start as they defeated Austria 1-0 in the tournament’s opening game.
In front of a record-breaking crowd at Old Trafford, the Three Lionesses had to work their way to victory from a tenacious Austrian side, with both teams struggling to create any significant chances in the early stages of the game.
But the block was broken in the 16th minute when Beth Mead brilliantly controlled a pass from Fran Kirby before looping over goalkeeper Manuel Zinsberger, the ball crossing the line just in time before an Austrian defender hacked it away.
The game opened then, but frustratingly England were unable to create any more chances in the first half, as Ellen White missed two great header chances while Lauren Hemp made a good save from a close-range shot.
It was a similar story in the second half as the hosts controlled the pace of the game but were unable to extend their lead and Chloe Kelly fired just wide after an excellent counterattack.
It was solid defensive work from Austria, who always looked dangerous but lacked much creativity in the last third, while England goalkeeper Mary Earps was largely unchallenged.
While it wasn’t the most spectacular result, it was a great victory for Sarina Wiegman’s side to build on with their next Group A game against Norway on Monday.
