England’s players were booed by a Hungarian crowd, mostly children, as they took their knee ahead of their Nations League clash in Budapest.

Saturday’s match at the Puskas Arena was originally scheduled to be played behind closed doors as part of a penalty imposed after repeated misconduct by Hungarian fans.

England players were racially insulted on their last visit to the city, when Raheem Sterling and Jude Bellingham were targeted with monkey chants in a 4-0 win last September.

But over 30,000 spectators were in attendance as Gareth Southgate’s side exploited a Uefa loophole with the Hungarian Football Association, allowing a limited number of Under-14 players to attend the games – with one adult allowed entry for every 10 children.

Both national anthems were respected, but audible boos and jeers erupted from the crowd as England players took a knee.

England manager Southgate said before kick-off he was “surprised” that so many fans would be in attendance.

“We have made clear where we stand on inclusivity and our feelings on racism and its unacceptance.

“Hopefully the young people at the stadium will see why this opportunity has arisen. We must continue to do the right things and lead by example.

“I think everyone learns from every experience they have. I know our players just wanted to focus on football.”
