Employment lawyer shares 3 signs of layoffs

Losing your job can be an overwhelming experience that makes you uncertain about your next steps and your future. However, Craig Levey, employment lawyer and partner at Bennett & Belfort PC, shared some signs a layoff could be on the horizon, so you can be prepared and take steps to protect yourself.

In a recent TikTok video posted to Craig’s TikTok account (@craigleveyesqon) on Jan. 9, the attorney shares, “A layoff often comes out of the blue, but sometimes you can tell by your company’s actions that that she is coming. He went on to list three signs a layoff could be imminent.

“You will receive a communication from your manager or your supervisor regarding budget constraints. Companies will often try to take other actions before making layoffs, so sometimes you as an employee can see the writing on the wall,” Craig says in the video.

He adds that another sign to look out for is when “your manager asks you a lot of questions about your day-to-day duties. They want to know what to do after they fire you, so they need those details beforehand.”

The lawyer’s last sign is when an employer “tacitly relieves you of all your duties and asks you nothing. Because they are preparing for your release, sometimes they start before they actually tell you.”

The video garnered widespread attention, garnering over 165,000 views as of Monday, with many viewers sharing their own advice and signs of impending sacking.

One user commented, “Here’s another sign: when they’re waiting to train you for another role but have already started training some staff. Signs you’re part of the layoffs.”

Another viewer added, “Also watch out for the top leadership jump ship, especially when there are a lot of them in a short amount of time.”

A third commenter shared: “It’s only going to get worse. The first quarter of 2023 will be particularly tough in technology, banking and retail.”

“So tru bestie, this all just happened to me,” added another user.
