Union leaders say nearly 9,000 employees of various state-owned banks will go on strike for two days nationwide starting Thursday to protest the government’s move to target privatize two public sector lenders.

AIBEA Secretary General CH Venkatachalam said representatives of unions, the Association of Indian Banks and the finance ministry took part in the conciliation meeting.

“We reiterate our position that if the government guarantees that the Banking Privatization Bill (Banking Law Amendment Bill, 2021) will not be introduced in this session of the National Assembly, we will there will be a tendency to reconsider the strike but the government can’t come up with anything that guarantees us,” said Venkatachalam.

The unions have tried their best to stop the strike to avoid inconvenience to the public but the government will not proceed, he said, adding that the strike was called to protect and protect the PSBs. .
