No more Meredith Gray? Ellen Pompeo implied that she Grey’s anatomy Character may not always be on the show — and that’s fine with her.

The Massachusetts native, who since the series debuted in 2005, has been Dr. Meredith Gray plays, revealed that she and the creator Shonda Rhimes have discussed the possibility of her leaving the series before its official end.

“Shonda and I, I think – we’ll see, we’ll see,” Pompeo, 52, said entertainment tonight in an interview published on Monday May 23 whether the show will go on without her in the future. “The challenge at this point is constantly trying to reinvent the show.”

That Old school The actress, who has now directed 400 episodes for the ABC series, noted that the medical drama’s impact on audiences has kept it going for so long.

“The show appeals to a lot of people and young people love the show,” Pompeo explained. “It’s inspired so many generations of healthcare workers, so I think it’s really good content for the young people.”

She teased: “We’ll try to keep it going for the young people, not necessarily with me but it’s beyond me.”

When asked whose “anatomy” it would be without her character, Pompeo replied, “We’ll find someone, or maybe we won’t.”

That daredevil The actress has been vocal in recent years about being ready to leave the show after running for 18 seasons.

“I feel like I’m the super-naive guy who keeps saying, ‘But what’s the story going to be, what story are we going to tell?'” Pompeo said insider in December 2021. “Everyone’s like, ‘Who cares, Ellen? It makes a ton of dollars.”

Three years earlier, the SAG Award winner told an exclusive story Us weekly that she and Rhimes, 52, will make the “joint decision” on when the series will go off air.

“Acting is … it’s a young girl’s game. You have to travel, you have to be away. [You’ve] I have to go here and work in the rain at night,” Pompeo said Us in May 2018 and stated that she has no plans to act again after that Grays wraps. “I’m not saying I never will. If a great opportunity arises, I am sure that I will of course seize it.”

Despite their efforts to end the procedural drama, Grey’s anatomy was renewed for season 19 in January.

“I couldn’t be more excited that we’ll be able to continue telling the stories of Meredith, Bailey, Richard and all the other doctors at Gray Sloan Memorial for another season,” Rhimes said in a statement at the time. “This is real proof of that [showrunner] Krista Vernoffthe cast, crew and all the writers who keep audiences hooked week after week.”

Grey’s anatomy The season 18 finale airs Thursday, May 26 at 8 p.m. ET on ABC.
