A month before the premiere Judi Densch criticized the new season for being “completely inaccurate” and urged Netflix to add a disclaimer emphasizing that the show is fictional. “The closer the drama comes to our present, the more willingly it seems willing to blur the lines between historical accuracy and clumsy sensationalism,” the Oscar winner wrote in an open letter The times published October 2022. “No one believes in artistic freedom more than I do, but that cannot go unchallenged.”
Following the backlash, Netflix added a clarifying statement to the season 5 trailer on YouTube and on the show’s official website. “Inspired by real events, this fictional dramatization tells the story of Queen Elizabeth II and the political and personal events that shaped her reign,” the statement said.
For her part, Debicki has praised the creator and showrunner Pete Morgan for telling the story of the royal family respectfully. “The amount of research and diligence and conversation and dialogue that’s happening from the viewer’s perspective about something that you would probably never notice is just immense,” he said widows star tells Weekly entertainment in October 2022. “From that very first meeting [with] Peter, I knew I had walked into this room where this was taken seriously [in] a deeply caring nature.
