Gloucestershire Police and Crime Inspector Chris Nelson said his force received 66 Nissan Leafs and nine Nissan NV200 vans in February 2020.

He added: “I’ve heard a lot of problems with officers driving around in electric vehicles trying to find charging options, running out of steam and then having to find another vehicle.

“While I fully understand and support climate controls, my first priority is crime prevention.”

He said he was ok with the move to electric vehicles, but continued: “We have the largest fleet in percentage terms and that has brought its problems.

“The design options for electric vehicles for operational use are perhaps not as mature as I would like.

“Well, let’s put it this way, I’m cautious at this point in going down that path.

“If an officer is in a traffic accident and his lights are on, his radio is on, his heater is on, I don’t want him to run out of power just because he’s in an electric car.”
