EE warns of blocking up to a million fraudulent calls EVERY DAY from international criminals – how to stay safe

UP to a million fraudulent calls per day from foreign scammers are blocked by the EE mobile network.

Brits have been warned to be extra vigilant as dodgy calls and texts remain a massive problem.

BT’s own provider says most of the fake contacts are from international sites claiming to be from UK numbers for reasons of legitimacy.

They are often run by massive international scam networks that try to trick innocent victims into giving up personal information, device access, and even banking credentials.

Since the improved detection technology was introduced in July, 11 million fraudulent calls have been blocked from reaching EE, BT and Plusnet customers.

AI is used to screen calls coming into the UK from other countries and blocks those claiming to be from UK shores.

This prevents the call from getting through to people at all.

Since rolling out an anti-spam filter last year, EE has also blocked 200 million fraudulent texts.

“We invest in the latest technology to ensure as many fraudulent calls as possible are blocked before they reach our customers,” said Chris Howe, EE’s Customer Care Change Director.

“Everyone should feel safe picking up their phone or reading a text message without fear of being scammed.”

This is how you avoid falling for a scam

Fraudsters are always looking for new ways to bypass defenses, so such technology cannot prevent every single fraudulent call or SMS.

To protect yourself, there are some tips to remember.

Always take a moment to stop and think when someone contacts you – and ultimately, trust your instincts.

If it sounds too good to be true or suspicious, something is probably wrong.

Don’t stay on the phone unless you’re 100 percent sure the caller is real.

Do not give out any of your personal information and do not allow anyone access to your computer.

If you think you have provided your bank account information, contact your bank immediately.

If you receive a suspicious call, you can report it free of charge by texting the phone number to 7726 – investigators can then attempt to permanently block the number.

You should then manually block the number on your own phone.

And make others aware of these types of calls and the numbers they’re coming from, so they know too.
