One of the best drivers on the grid a few years ago, Ricciardo joined McLaren in 2021 in what is proving to be an unfortunate move for the Australian.
The 32-year-old was consistently beaten by Norris last season despite clinching the team’s first win since 2012 at the Italian Grand Prix and it was hoped Ricciardo would return to his new team after a year of settling in at his best.
That is not the case, however, and if anything, the gap between Ricciardo and Norris has widened as the former 11th overall has finished in the top 10 just once this season after seven races.
Meanwhile, Norris, who is 10 years his junior, has continued his rapid development, taking a podium finish at Imola and currently 37 points clear of his team-mate.
“He lets races go by and you very rarely get a chance to get that back,” the former Jordan F1 Team owner and team principal told Channel 4.
“I think I would be watching his career path from now on because I’m not sure how far he can go. Lando destroys him, mentally, physically and on the track.
“And when you have a scenario like that on a team, it comes at you. So he has to shake it up immediately.’
Ahead of last Sunday’s Monaco Grand Prix, where Ricciardo finished 13th compared to Norris in sixth, McLaren CEO Zak Brown claimed the former Renault and Red Bull driver “is not living up to expectations ‘ and suggested terminating his contract until the end of the next season.
It would be a bold move and one that former McLaren driver Jenson Button disagrees with, and the 2009 world champion was also less than impressed with Brown’s handling of the situation.
“Zak is his own man and I can’t change his mind and what he says but I was surprised that he came out and said that,” Button told Sky Sports.
“Everyone on the team should protect these drivers. Formula 1 is a real thinking game. They all have immense skill, but you don’t perform unless your head is in the right place.
“I hope they have spoken since the race and can focus on really getting the best out of Daniel and the team around him for the rest of the year. Then we’ll see where he ends up in the future. This is not an easy situation for a driver.”
