A popular paddling pool was closed in the sweltering heat after people used it to clean themselves.

A group of travelers were seen using the water features at Fleming Park in Eastleigh to wash up.

It came after 30-35 caravans and vehicles camped out without permission at a nearby camp on Monday night.

Eastleigh Borough Council said they had closed the paddling pool with immediate effect and would not open it until the group moved on.

“Council officials have already visited the camp (Tuesday 12 July) to urge travelers to vacate the premises and we continue to monitor the situation,” it said in a statement.

It was announced this morning that police had used Section 61 powers to order them to leave the area.

The pool is now open again after being emptied, cleaned, refilled and the water quality checked.

The council said it was following its “normal procedure” for dealing with unauthorized stocks, as seen on its website.

Travelers are asked to contact the local authorities to apply for a pitch.

The costs usually include pitch fees, council tax and utilities such as water.
