Dynasty Fantasy Football Tight End Tiers: Cole Kmet’s goal chance gives him a huge advantage

The May release of Dynasty Tiers will look a little different. You can thank recent podcast guest Rich Hribar for that. On a Tuesday episode of Fantasy Football Today, Rich spoke about his ranks over at Sharp Football Analysis and how they are somewhat tied to his rankings, but only loosely. Instead, he classifies more according to archetypes. I told him it sounded like a more fun method and I’m going to try it here. You can tell me what you think.

It’s easy to see why people might be tempted to say the position looks deep at the moment. Especially with names like Rob Gronkowski and Zach Ertz at the bottom of Tier 7. But the real test of whether that position is deeper in the long run falls on Tier 4.

Cole Kmet, my favorite tight end in this class, has had a pretty great offseason so far and seems most likely to be Justin Fields’ second favorite target in week 1. Every year in the late round we get a surprise in the tight top 5 and what they often have in common is that they finish first or second in goals with their own team.

If Kmet is able to get a big target percentage into a top 5 season, he will surely jump to Tier 3 and possibly higher. After all, there isn’t anyone in Tier 2 that we should expect to see much longer maintenance. So while Tier 4 could be the key to position depth, it could also be where we find the most likely future tight end #3 behind Kyle Pitts and Mark Andrews.

If I were to speculate on who that might be (besides Kmet), I’d go with Noah Fant. That’s partly because I’m a fan of his athletic profile. But he could also enter 2023 as the No. 2 offensive threat behind DK Metcalf, with a high-profile rookie quarterback throwing football to him. If Fant could only stay healthy this year and give us another low-end top 12 season, he could be in line for a major breakthrough in the following season, which will also coincide with his contract year.
