A man who was allegedly drunk is said to have broken into his ex-girlfriend’s house and thrown the ashes of their deceased child in the trash.

Joseph Oberlies, 33, was caught on camera at 3am Saturday as he approached his ex-girlfriend’s apartment, entered the security code and walked inside, according to a report by WCIV.

Footage showed Oberlies leaving the home in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina minutes later, returning just after 4 a.m. and finally departing around 8 a.m.

Oberlies’ ex-girlfriend, who was not named, told police that he threw some of her deceased child’s ashes in the trash with her ex-husband. She said he also banged a hammer on her flat screen TV.

The woman added that Oberlies would not have known that she and her children were not at home and she could have become violent if they had been there, the report said.

Oberlies initially told police he was in West Ashley at the time of the burglary. But when video evidence was presented to him, Oberlies claimed he was “blacked out drunk” and had no recollection of what he did.

He was arrested Thursday and charged with destroying human remains and first-degree burglary. Oberlies was checked into the Al Cannon Detention Center in North Charleston on the morning of his arrest and was released on $60,000 bail that evening.

Oberlies and the woman dated for a few months at the beginning of the summer of 2022. She is said to have entered Oberlies on August 23 from the apartment.

Police sent out an alert to keep an eye on the school attended by the woman’s other children and stepped up patrols.

Oberlies was out on bail following a previous arrest on August 5, for which he faces first-degree charges and battery charging, prison records show. The incident was strikingly similar – Oberlies allegedly broke into the house of another ex-girlfriend and stabbed her to death.
