Motorists have been warned they could face fines of up to £5,000 for driving with a dog in their car.

Used car sellers Choose My Car are urging drivers to check the latest regulations before hitting the road with their pets.

Research from The Dog’s Trust suggests that well over half of drivers do not think it is dangerous to dive with an unbelted dog.

However, Rule 57 of the Highway Code states: “When you are in a vehicle, make sure dogs or other animals are properly restrained so they cannot distract you while driving or injure you or yourself if you stop quickly.

“A seat belt, pet carrier, dog crate, or dog guard are all means of restraining animals in cars.”

Breaches of the rule are punishable by a fine of £1,000 – up to a maximum of £5,000 – plus nine penalty points and even a driving ban and a mandatory re-test.

Nick Zapolski, founder of Choice My Car, said: “Leaving your dog loose in the car can cause serious harm to both them and you.

“Not only can it be very distracting, in the event of an accident, a loose dog could be fatal.

“It’s safest to buckle your dog in the back seat as the passenger seat airbags could also cause serious harm to your pooch in a crash. The belts are cheap to buy and easy to use.

“Most importantly, they protect you and your dog while protecting you from the serious consequences of violating the Highway Code.”
