A driver has accumulated parking fines of over £117,000 in just over a year, believed to be a UK record.
The Honda motorist received 588 tickets between December 2020 and March 2022 – with each ticket appearing to cost almost £200 as penalties apply for failing to pay on time, The Sun reports.
The driver is being hunted for payment, according to Islington Council in north London, which has logged the fines.
The collection is believed to be the costliest for a single driver who broke traffic rules in the last year, according to figures released by the councils.
Many of the worst offenders were in London.
A Ford Transit van was ticketed more than 400 times while parked in exclusive Cadogan Square last year in Kensington and Chelsea, west London, but all were paid for.
The driver of a BMW in Gateshead faced 701 fines totaling £32,926 over three years before bailiffs impounded the car.
Meanwhile, a driver from Birmingham collected £31,739 in tickets and someone from Nottingham £22,200.
In Brighton and Hove, a driver collected 256 unpaid tickets worth £17,400 in just one year.
Bath and North East Somerset Council said they had impounded a vehicle and auctioned it off to settle a £14,695 debt from 129 tickets.
Wakefield Council in West Yorkshire similarly sold a Ford Focus to settle a £13,609 debt from 121 tickets.
The AA’s Jack Cousens said: “It is clearly unacceptable behavior and will ultimately impact law-abiding motorists as councils seek to increase the parking fees we all pay to cover these administrative costs.
“A driver who misses a ticket or two can reasonably argue that they were unaware of the charges, but these show evasion on an industrial scale.”
