dr Anthony Fauci, President Joe Biden’s coronavirus czar, has contracted the virus.

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) announced on Wednesday afternoon that 81-year-old Fauci had a rapid Covid-19 antigen test, which was positive.

Fauci “is currently exhibiting mild symptoms,” according to the institute, and will isolate and work from home.

“He has not been in close contact with President Biden or other senior government officials recently,” the institute said.

Fauci has been director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) since 1984 and Biden’s senior medical adviser. He has advised seven US Presidents.

He was last seen in public on June 3rd when he was the keynote speaker at a City College of New York graduation ceremony.

“Dr. Fauci will follow the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s COVID-19 guidelines and the medical advice of his physician and will return to the NIH if he tests negative,” the institute said.

Fauci is fully vaccinated and has received two booster shots.

He was one of the first Americans to receive a coronavirus vaccine — a Moderna shot in December 2020 at the National Institutes of Health Clinical Center in Maryland. Fauci said the moment was “symbolic for the rest of the country.”

“I have great faith in the safety and effectiveness of this vaccine so that we could have a protective veil over this country that would end this pandemic,” Fauci said at the time.

Biden is one of the few senior administration officials who has not contracted the coronavirus.

Earlier this week, Health Minister Xavier Becerra announced that he had contracted Covid-19 for the second time in less than four weeks.

Other senior officials who have had the virus include Vice President Kamala Harris, Attorney General Merrick Garland, Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo and White House domestic policy adviser Susan Rice.
