People have used gold to pay for goods and services for thousands of years. It is widely regarded as one of the most reliable currencies.
TikToker Luis Navarro (@itsluisnavarro) was thrilled to discover that a DoorDash customer had recently tipped him with the precious metal.
“I just received what is probably the weirdest DoorDash tip I’ve ever received. Got a jack in the box order, it was really good, actually it was $13 for just two miles…. I pull up in front of the house and then the guy comes out and I’m just like, here’s your food. And he says, ‘Wait, me […] I have something for you,’” Navarro said.
“He starts to reach into his pocket. I think, dammit, I’m about to get shot or something, I should get out of this situation. But no he pulls out this little thing that looks like a card and I’m just like, what the heck is that… At first I thought it was a debit card cut in half or like a gift card cut in half, that’s what I figured. But he pulls that out.”
Navarro held up a small card with a small rectangular cut-out in the center through which a gold coin can be seen.
He continued, “I’m like, what the fuck is this shit, and he’s like, ‘It’s gold.'”
“And immediately my heart starts racing. I think no way dude.”
“…I freaked out, bro. It was like Charlie and the Chocolate Factory Running to my car, you know how it runs in the movies? So I ran to my car.”
Navarro aimed the camera at the gold piece, revealing its weight and other details.
“That’s a third gram of gold, brother,” he said. “…This shit was lit. It was a cool Christmas present.”
According to GoldGramBars, a gram is currently worth $58, which brings his tip to around $20.
The Daily Dot has contacted Navarro via TikTok comment and DoorDash via email for more information.
Others shared their own unconventional tipping stories in the comments. One wrote, “Best tip I got was an ounce.” Another said, “I got a dime tip once, no joke.”
Many described receiving extremely generous tips for deliveries. One said a customer tipped them $40; Another said that a customer tipped $20 and that “the tip was more than the food itself.”
Crowds of TikTokers encouraged Navarro to hold on to gold as it is likely to appreciate even if talk of the United States heading into recession is true.
“Keep it. That’s the only tip that increases in value,” said one.
Investopedia states that while gold can be difficult to profit from in the short term, it is a very safe long-term investment that has traditionally held its value.
