On Doom Patrol season 4 episode 4, on Danny the Street, Dorothy tells the story of her trip to a museum, where she used the candle maker to steal back her necklace. With the help of the Detective Dead Boys, Dorothy used the necklace to resurrect and spend years with her father before he returned to the afterlife.

safe room

Elsewhere, a team of drag queens clean up hateful graffiti and turn it into a mural to be proud of. As the queens head home to Danny the Street, they meet Dorothy and the band of loving misfits that make up the street. Unfortunately, the street is always crowded and fast.

At night, Dorothy watches families eat together and Danny sees that she is sad. When Maura Lee (the beautiful Queen in Purple) stops by to ask Dorothy if she wants to do karaoke and tries to cheer her up, she reminds them that they’re lucky to have a safe place to go home can come.

As Maura and Dorothy discuss their favorite superhero, Space Case, the street is under attack by drones, turning anyone bitten into a red-eyed robotic creature. Maura suggests that Dorothy join the Doom Patrol, but she feels misunderstood by everyone.

The Vectra

When the power goes out, Dorothy and Maura realize something is wrong on Danny the Street. Maura urges Dorothy to go inside while she investigates, but everyone she sees has been turned into a screeching robotic creature, and Danny is unable to jump to a different location in time or space.

Stuck in her trailer with Maura, Dorothy recognizes the robots as the foot soldiers of the bad guys from her comic. Dorothy realizes that not even the Candle Maker can help her, so instead she brings to life Space Case, who warns them both that the evil alien Torminox will be here soon.

Torminox turns anyone he wants to control into Vectra, the robotic creatures that humans took over in Danny the Street. Space Case is confident they can beat Torminox, despite being partially distracted by the new human emotions she’s feeling. Maura isn’t so sure.

Maura and Dorothy are both shocked that instead of creating an imaginary friend, she took an existing character from a comic book. When Casey attacks one of the Vectra, they explain that death is permanent in the real world, and Dorothy explains Casey’s story to her frame by frame.

Forever

After hearing her own story from Dorothy and seeing her comic, Casey believes she is in the real world. At that moment Torminox attacks, it turns out he came to earth for Dorothy’s necklace and until she gives it to him he holds Danny the Street hostage and kills everyone else.

When Casey confronts her father, she is shocked by his request that she stay out of danger and is unable to fight him. Instead, Dorothy calls the Candlemaker to help her, and he knocks out the Vectra jerks before telling Dorothy to run while Torminox drains his energy.

Dorothy hides in a nearby building and berates Casey for faltering in front of her father. Casey explains that there was something different about that fight, she was concerned that her father would not survive this time and she recalled their happy childhood together before he was Torminox.

Casey admits she doesn’t know who she would be without Torminox, and Maura suggests that maybe she can get through to him instead of having to kill him. Although they hide in a building, Maura runs into the street when she sees someone spray-painting her mural.

Grief is constant

When Maura confronts the painter, she finds out that he covered up the graffiti and didn’t add it. Inspired by the boy’s kindness, Maura asks him how much color he has, and she, Dorothy, and Casey meet Torminox face to face in the spray-painted alleyway.

On the alley wall, the boy has spray-painted a picture of Casey’s father pushing her on a swing set before he was Torminox. When Casey asks him to take a different route, he begins to choke her, prompting Dorothy to give up the necklace for Casey and Danny’s lives.

Dorothy passionately explains that she wanted to use the necklace to tell her father all the things she never could, but she didn’t. The story of her trip to the museum with the Candlemaker is a lie, and Dorothy has not spoken to any of her imaginary friends for months in grief.

Everyone in her life reminds her too much of her father, her imaginary friends, the Doom Patrol, and even Danny the Street. Dorothy thought the necklace would help her tell Niles that she loved him, but she realized she was angry at him too. She needed him and he wasn’t there.

Immortus will rise

Instead, Dorothy gives Torminox the necklace and tells him to fuck off for turning his back on Casey’s father. Once Torminox is gone, Maura gathers Danny’s people around a campfire on the street and encourages them to create safe places in the real world.

Dorothy talks to Casey, who says she wants to find the person who wrote the story of her and her father and get her to change the ending. Dorothy agrees that she needs a change of pace, and in the morning Danny sends her and Casey to Cloverton in a light blue convertible.

In a dark room, Dr. Janus takes the necklace she took from Rita to the artist behind Casey’s story and tells him that Immortus will rise. As she is leaving, Torminox arrives to hand over Dorothy’s necklace and asks the artist if Immortus can make him the man he was before for Casey.
