Warning… spoilers below!

On Doom Patrol season 4 episode 2In 2016, a man was put into a thick hazmat suit and ordered to inspect a fake street and clear up mannequins and rubbish. As the Bureau monitored his progress, the man would move around until a creature was released, brutally and quickly killing him.

Arm the future

In 2017, eccentric doctor Margret Yu was introduced to the Bureau’s top-secret project at the Bureau’s ant farm. The office bred unstoppable creatures, butts with huge gaping mouths that they had to communicate with since they were constantly angry.

After a while, Dr. Yu the asses to sing show tunes and dance with sticks to the delight of the bureau. The butts were called Glueteus Morticus and were complex and intelligent. dr Yu called the butts peaceful creatures, but the FBI wanted to use them for war.

as dr Yu asked the government not to use the butts as a weapon, they reassigned them and told her she would be fired if she spoke out. In 2019, while the Doom Patrol were fighting butts at the Ant Farm, Dr. Clueless to the end, Yu found one of her subjects

Save the world

At Doom Manor in the present, the gang discuss ways to prevent the future Ace Pocalypse. Since they fought asses as zombies, it’s all their fault, and Rita feels they should start doing the opposite of their future selves, including wearing different clothes.

The rest of the Doom Patrol believe the group needs a leadership change to get things off the ground, and Rita reluctantly agrees to a vote. To their dismay, they have tentatively chosen Madame Rouge as their new leader, since she is the only one not in the future.

Vic thinks he should be in charge, but the group agrees that Madame Rouge would be a better fit without his technique and with his emotional attitude. Darren Jones, who escaped the zombie massacre at the barnyard last year, could be the source of the infection, so that’s the first stop.

Rita refuses to take part in the mission as she is not in charge, leaving Rouge, Cyclops, Crazy Jane, Cliff and Larry to guide. She sends Jane, Larry and Cyclops away and asks Cliff to join her as Darren Jones needs to be eliminated and Cliff is pretty zombie proof.

solo acts

With Rouge and Cliff gone, Vic uses the computer to search for images of flesh-eating butts and Larry tries to comfort a frightened Keeg, who leaves Larry’s body and flies away. Sitting in her room, Jane is trying to decipher the mountain of edgeless puzzle pieces Kay gave her.

After finding a butt, Vic is pissed when he realizes that Cliff and Rouge left without the others and embarks on a mission of his own with Jane. Alone in the mansion, Larry and Rita argue while Larry frantically searches for Keeg. Rita is angry that Larry didn’t endorse her as team leader.

For once, Larry stands his ground and tells Rita that she was never a good leader, just the beginning of a game of vanity with the Doom Patrol. After Larry’s speech, Rita realizes that he still sees her as a stranger, and she accuses him of taking the only thing she has left: authority.

Meanwhile, somewhere in a park, Jane and Vic pose as members of the Bureau of Normalcy, waiting to meet anyone who has information on the butts. Jane asks Vic why he’s so obsessed with being normal, while Vic asks Jane if she’s spoken to Kay lately and tells her about the interview.

Grapefruit Brains and the Butt Hunter

In Darren Jones’ barn, Rouge and Cliff are waiting to ambush him. Cliff can still understand zombie talk and tells Darren he has to die. Darren, a former member of the Presidium, isolated himself from human brains and refused to be a zombie, and now he’s ready to die.

Cliff is angered by Darren’s pleas to be put down for the greater good, but Madame Rouge has no trouble enticing Darren to fight Cliff, who brutally kills him. During the fight, Madame Rouge has flashbacks in which she, as an FBI agent, marks innocent people as weapons.

Instead of his grandson, Cliff touches the inside of Darren’s zombie brain first, but he still agrees that Madame Rouge’s plan was the right one. Elsewhere, Vic and Jane meet up with the Butt Hunter, a Bureau agent who rounded up the horde of escaped killer butts.

Many of the butts were safely recovered, but the ultimate destination has eluded him for some time. This butt appeared to be infected and the hunter put the butt on ice to take to the ant farm. With Flit’s help, Jane and Vic get the sick butt home before the real FBI agents catch them.

Ladies having lunch

Cliff, Madame Rouge, Jane and Vic arrive at the mansion at the same time, all with good news. Darren Jones is dead and the zombie butt is recovered but when Cliff tries to kill him he has problems as he looks so small and innocent and he has a panic attack for killing Darren.

Unbeknownst to Cliff, Madame Rouge listens to him talk about how he feels that Darren’s life is in his hands, and thinks once again of the lives she has ruined. Jane watches Kay’s interview, where she explains that her personas need a new purpose or they disappear.

Elsewhere, Dr. Yu returns to her apartment in the present where she listens to show tunes and has lunch with Nicolas, the butt she saved from the ant farm that no one knows about.
