Donald Trump says he’s been charged over secret documents | US News

Former President Donald Trump said he has been charged as part of an investigation into his handling of classified documents, which is his second indictment in about two months.
Trump revealed the news in a heated post on his Truth Social platform Thursday night.
“The corrupt Biden administration has notified my attorneys that I have been charged, apparently on the Boxes hoax,” Trump wrote.
Trump said he was subpoenaed to appear in federal court in Miami at 3 p.m. Tuesday.
“I never thought it possible that something like this could happen to a former President of the United States, who received far more votes than any other sitting President in the history of our country and currently leads by far all candidates, both Democrats.” and Republicans, in 2024 presidential polls,” Trump wrote in another post.
“I AM AN INNOCENT MAN!”
This comes after Trump became the first former president to be impeached on March 30, amid investigations by Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg into his role in a hush-hush payment to porn star Stormy Daniels. Trump pleaded not guilty to 34 counts of forging business records on April 4.
Just after 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Trump sent out a donation email with the news of the impeachment and urged his supporters to “make a contribution to stand by his side peacefully.”
“We are watching our republic die before our eyes,” the email said.
“The Biden-appointed special counsel has charged me with yet another witch hunt over documents I was allowed to keep as President of the United States.
“This witch hunt started when the FBI searched my house and then staged it to look like a TV crime scene with police sirens and red and blue lights flashing.”
The investigation, led by Special Counsel Jack Smith, focuses on file boxes the FBI seized on Aug. 8 from Trump’s Mar-a-Lago home. Among them were 184 documents marked as confidential. Trump has denied any wrongdoing and has repeatedly called Smith’s investigation a witch hunt.
A federal grand jury on Smith’s investigation was reportedly meeting Thursday in Florida.
The indictment is classified, a source told NBC News.
A spokesman for Smith declined to comment.
Trump shared a four-minute video on Truth Social in which he maintained his innocence and slammed the Biden administration.
“You can’t stop because this is high-level election interference,” Trump said. “There has never been anything like what happened.” I am an innocent man. I am an innocent person.’
In another post, he wrote, “This is indeed a DARK DAY for the United States of America.”
Trump’s new indictment comes six days after the Justice Department said it would not indict his former Vice President Mike Pence over classified documents found at his Indiana home. Pence submitted his candidacy for president on Monday.
Despite mounting legal troubles, Trump remains the clear front-runner for the Republican nomination in 2024.
