Donald Trump Leads Ron DeSantis in New National Polls

Two newly released polls suggest that the former president donald trump can be a hard end for Ron DeSantis in 2024.

In two national polls of a previously hypothetical 2024 Republican presidential primary, the former president defeated Florida’s governor in a crowded field and aligned with others current survey. This suggests that enthusiasm among certain conservative intellectuals for DeSantis may not yet have fully translated to potential voters.

A McLaughlin On-site polls from Dec. 9-14 showed Trump winning both in a crowded field and in a head-to-head comparison with DeSantis. Trump’s 48% was more than double DeSantis’ 23%. Vice President Mike Pence had 5%, good for third place, followed by Ex-Rep. Liz Cheney at 4% and former UN ambassador Nikki Haley at 3%. Mitt Romney had 2%, and Marco Rubio was one of eight names that received 1%.

While many recent polls have shown that DeSantis would field Trump if only the field were limited to just those two candidates, McLaughlin’s poll shows Trump easily outperforming DeSantis with 58% support versus just 36% for the governor. Back in October, when the question was first asked, Trump had a 64% to 29% lead.

One bright spot: If Donald Trump doesn’t run for some reason, DeSantis is the front-runner among those 480 likely Republican primary voters. He took 39% support against the field Donald Trump Jr. in second place with 16% as it continues to outperform others with this pollster. Pence had 7% support, no other potential candidate had more than 4% of the vote.

A second recent poll by Cygnal, Analysis conducted Dec. 12-14 shows Trump just four points ahead of DeSantis, with one analysis touting “mid-term restructuring.”

“While Trump is still leading the field, his lead over DeSantis has narrowed to 5% from 19% in October. DeSantis is his equal, with 74% of GOP primary voters saying they have a positive opinion of each. Trump leads the hypothetical vote with 40% saying they plan to vote for the former president.”

Without Trump in the field, DeSantis had 52% support among the 1,079 likely voters surveyed. The pollsters note clear differences between the supporters of the former president and the governor.

“While the 2024 Republican presidential nomination race is a long way off, the momentum has shifted in recent weeks,” said the Cygnal president and pollster Brent Buchanan. “DeSantis’ rise has been fueled in part by strengthening his support among more educated Republicans, while (former) President Trump retains better support among less educated primary voters.”

“A trend is beginning to emerge for the Republican Party among age groups — younger voters are sticking with the former president while the older voting bloc is moving toward DeSantis, and middle-aged voters remain divided between the two,” said political strategist Cygnal Mitchell Brown.
