Doctor Who EP Says Ncuti Gatwa’s Casting Isn’t Just About Diversity

Ncuti Gatwa will be the first black actor to bring The Doctor to life properly Doctor Whobut while diversity and representation are important to the long-running sci-fi series, executive producer Russell T. Davies says the reason he chose Gatwa was simply his exceptional audition.

On the BAFTAs red carpet, RadioTimes got a chance to chat with Davies, who is returning to the series after more than a decade. Explaining the decision to remove Ncuti Gatwa from all secret candidates, he revealed that it is not just about “diversity and representation”, adding:

“Just the best actor walked in,” he explained. “I am aware that this is all part of it. I guess when you’re six you don’t care. And that’s really the basic reason for me. Because I saw it when I was six, I’m doing it here. So six-year-olds watching now will make it 50 years from now.”

Russell goes on to say that diversity is indeed important WHObut at the end of the day, the show is about a two-hearted alien who fights monsters with a sonic screwdriver in a police box that can travel through all time and space.

“Even so, I think those things are very important post-cast. I think diversity and representation are very important. I want to assure everyone that you can just sit down and watch an amazing 45 minute episode of Doctor Who with Doctor Who fighting the monsters as always. I’ve always had something to say in my dramas and I always will, so it’s good drama, but it’s all new territory.”

The acclaimed author of It’s a sin also said the show never tires of taking the spotlight away from Jo Martin, who was officially the first black actress to play the role, but only for one episode in 2020 and a small cameo role in 2021.

Jodie Whittaker’s Thirteenth Doctor regenerates during the upcoming Christmas field trip. After that, Davies and Gatwa will start the next chapter of Doctor Who with the show’s 60th anniversary special.
