“Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness”: Our Biggest WTF Questions

While it is good and really enough Wonder‘s high-octane entertainment level, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness looked surprisingly divided reviews — what promised a deep dive into the infinite possibilities of the multiverse turned out to be largely at about three. And yet that doesn’t mean that by a long shot Sequel to Doctor Strangewith Benedict Cumberbatch and Elizabeth Olsen makes perfect sense.

Let’s dive into the remaining questions, loose ends, and theories we have about the latest superhero juggernaut.

10. Why didn’t Wanda seek an alternate vision?

Wanda has targeted alternate versions of her twins, Billy and Tommy, in order to kidnap them, so why didn’t she seek out a vision that Thanos survived? Perhaps her love Vision dies in every possible version of the Avengers’ battle with the supervillain (Thanos would have to remove the Mind Stone each time to keep Vision alive). Still, with her Darkhold powers souped up, Wanda could surely find the new vision created in the Disney Plus series WandaVision. Their pairing seems like a far more viable reality than the always-doomed idea of stealing another Wanda’s children.

9. Why didn’t Wanda find a universe where her alter ego had died? So she could raise the twins?

Presumably Wanda didn’t do this because there is no universe where she died. But if her morale was so tainted by the Darkhold, why couldn’t she create another Westview-esque hex and manifest new children for herself again? Again, it is rightly pointed out that the idea of stealing another Wanda’s children is futile at the beginning of the film.

8. Why is Doctor Strange the same in every universe but not Spider-Man?

That’s the constant question. Spider-Man is completely different in each universe. He’s even someone other than Peter Parker in an animated universe. So why is Doctor Strange the same man apart from different facial hair and ponytails? Didn’t we just visit the universes where he’s a different person? Or is there only one Stephen Strange, the brilliant neurosurgeon who goes to Kamar-Taj to become a master of the mystical arts? Meanwhile, elsewhere, many different characters are gaining superpowers from radioactive spiders.

7. What is the difference between magic and witchcraft?

Wanda has been pejoratively referred to as a “witch” several times (outside of her Scarlet Witch moniker) despite being in the morally questionable Darkhold mode. However, this still begs the question: Why is their magic considered witchcraft and not pure magic, just like the wizards? Is it because the rune magic in Darkhold is actually sorcery? But isn’t the Scarlet Witch still a sorceress? It’s all very confusing. Also in WandaVision her dark powers are defined as the almighty chaos magic. So why not go with it and avoid the more loaded witch term? Chaos Magic sounds way cooler anyway.

6. Is there a universe where Wong is constantly being attacked by clowns?

One of the more questionable ideas put forward in Into the Multiverse: Dreams really are windows to other multiversal realities. One of these realities involves Wong being chased by clowns. So does this happen in a clown universe? If so, the film missed a trick in not showing us this hilarious scenario.

5. What happened to America’s parents?

This is one of those loose ends that we’re assuming will be addressed in future Marvel installments. While Xochitl Gomez’s IMDb page doesn’t reveal any upcoming Marvel projects, this certainly isn’t the last we’ve seen of her multiverse-hopping America Chavez.

4. Who built the Darkhold Tomb for the Scarlet Witch?

Someone had the incredible foresight to foresee that the Scarlet Witch would one day be buried in her own completed tomb on Mount Wundagore – although Wanda originally thought it was a citadel in her honour. Who was behind the construction project?

3. Where are Mr. Fantastic and Black Bolt from our universe?

A new Fantastic Four movie has been announced by Marvel (and recently lost its director, Jon Watts), so we’ll definitely be seeing the heroes back on screens. The question: Will John Krasinski reprise his role as Mr. Fantastic? His jubilant performance in Into the Multiverse hits the fan service button, but was it a one-off stunt casting or is Krasinski in it for the long haul? As for Black Bolt, actor Anson Mount has previously appeared on the small screen in the now-defunct Inhumans series. Could we see him return in the future, or is his Black Bolt gone forever like his Universe 838 counterpart?

2. Was Professor X from universe 838 a mutant?

Basically, is the existence of Professor X in the Marvel Cinematic Universe a confirmation that mutants are rampant? (Technically, Wanda herself began her comic life as a mutant, but has since been treated more like a sorceress.) The X-Men have long been rumored to appear in the MCU, so is Xavier’s appearance a precursor to a new movie? Waiting for more forthcoming announcements, Marvel.

Wonder

1. Why didn’t Wanda just go to Kamar-Taj with Strange and grab America there?

If Wanda tried so hard to be reasonable in her plans, then she could not have avoided killing dozens of wizards by accepting Doctor Strange’s proposal to protect America in Kamar-Taj and then secretly kidnapping the teenager there ? She’d already tried to fool Strange with her fake apple orchard, so it wasn’t like she planned to make up with him from the start. Just extend the charade safely within the compound’s walls and avoid all the fuss.
