Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is another monster hit for Marvel Studios. Sam Raimi’s wacky horror sequel has smashed box offices around the world, grossing an impressive $450 million in its opening weekend, making it the 11th-biggest premiere of all time.
It shattered a number of other notable records along the way, most notably on its IMAX release. In Prestige format, it has grossed $33 million, making it the fifth-highest global opening for a Marvel film in that format, the fifth-highest Thursday night IMAX preview, and the new IMAX record holder for a May release .
Those numbers will come as a sweet relief to IMAX, which has shut down its stores around the world during the COVID pandemic. Although audiences will spend much of 2020 and 2021 watching films at home, there still seems to be a large market for the community experience and colossal scale of an IMAX screening.
Expect more records to be broken throughout the year as Blockbuster season gets underway, although the biggest IMAX release will likely come right at the end. Judging by James Cameron’s epic trailer Avatar: The Way of Water will be absolutely stunning on a giant screen, with viewers still remembering how mind-blowing it was to see the original avatar was in IMAX 3D all those years ago.
But for now, that’s surprisingly creepy Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness takes first place, and it seems like a hell of a ride in an IMAX theater.
